I want you to imagine a very long tube that starts at your mouth and ends about 30 feet later after folding upon itself many times over. It includes organs such as your esophagus, stomach and intestines. Now, this tube is technically inside of you but it’s actually outside of you.
The food you put in your mouth goes on quite the adventure; it is chewed and churned into smaller and smaller pieces, it is squirted with gastric juices, enzymes, bile, hormones and alkalizing agents then, if the little doors in your epithelial cells are the right size, they allow key nutrients out into the blood stream for absorption without allowing larger molecules out in the process to create a negative immune response. Finally, hopefully, what is left will make its grand finale with a smooth and easy exit.
There are so many factors at play with digestion. Are you chewing your food thoroughly? Are you calm and relaxed when eating? Is your body producing enough stomach acid and then alkalizing agents? Are your hormones optimized to play their key roles when needed? Are the billions of bacteria in your digestive system plentiful and of the helpful variety? Are they getting enough nutrition because we need to not only feed ourselves but also this army of bacteria so that they support us. Otherwise, they can become like a mutiny on a ship trying to sink you, their captain.
Your brain, teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder and pancreas are all accessory organs that support the function of the digestive tract. There is a lot that can go right with this symphony beginning with the messages coming from your brain that food is on its way, to the gallbladder whose crucial role is to squeeze out the appropriate amount of bile for proper digestion of fats, to the trillions of bacteria that properly ferment for proper absorption of electrolytes.
And, let us have a moment of pause for our beautiful and under appreciated liver. It handles toxins, excess sugar, and all of the burdens of our contemporary world. It is so fundamental to our health that it even has the potential to regrow!
But, there is also a lot that can go wrong with digestion. And, this is where I come in. I have tools and tricks to help regulate and nurture sound digestive function.
I will guide you back to metabolic health with nutritional healing and sustainable lifestyle strategies
